The rules, one page each
- What Does an Unmodified GAAS Audit Opinion Cover?Sort it
A GAAS audit provides reasonable, not absolute, assurance that the financial statements as a whole are free of material misstatement from fraud or error. It gives no separate internal control or compliance opinion unless separately engaged.
- AU-C 210 Audit Acceptance: Preconditions and Scope LimitsDecision tree
Management must acknowledge its financial statement and internal control responsibilities and provide required information and access. Unless law or regulation requires acceptance, reject terms that shift those responsibilities, promise absolute assurance, or prohibit necessary audit procedures.
- Nonaudit services for audit clients: help vs management’s job (independence line)Contrasting cases
For attest clients, the CPA may perform nonattest services only if management accepts responsibility, designates an individual with suitable skill, knowledge, and experience, and the CPA does not assume management responsibilities such as authorizing transactions, selecting accounting policies, or implementing controls.
- Accepting advisory and consulting work: competence, evidence, and public interestStep by step
Before accepting or continuing a service, the CPA must be able to perform with professional competence and due care, obtain sufficient relevant data to support conclusions, and avoid unacceptable threats to compliance with the Code, including preparing or associating with misleading information.
- GAAS procedures and evidence: auditor decides scope, meets ‘should’ requirements, and gets enough evidenceDecision tree
Under GAAS the auditor determines the nature, timing, and extent of procedures needed to obtain sufficient appropriate evidence; client- or user‑imposed restrictions that would prevent this require declining. ‘Should’ requirements that are relevant must be performed unless exceptional circumstances justify departure with alternative procedures and documentation.
